Childhood

Never lose your Childlike exuberance.

In our Childhood, we are at the mercy of those around us. Family, culture, genetics, traditions, positive and negative experiences, all shape the individuals we become. As we become self-aware and try to navigate the often confusing and traumatic world around us, we strive to understand the world we live in. When a child is allowed to grow and develop naturally, their curiosity, playfulness and exuberance to live life to its fullest is ever present.

How often do we hear children “shrieking” with delight or dismay, such incredible sound coming out of one so small…the opera singer in the making. The throat Chakra fully open. Or we see the artist that uses indelible ink on the freshly painted external wall of their home (much to their parents chagrin). The mad scientist creating all manner of experiments, some downright dangerous… “Dad, what happens if I put this screwdriver into this electrical socket”. The sacral Chakra, the source of creativity in action. Qi flows naturally through the healthy child, their “Soma” intact, they are feeling beings.

They laugh, cry, love and experience life in a way that is carefree and innocent, until the weight of the world descends upon their tiny shoulders and sometimes subdues that wonderful lightness of being. The act of “socialisation” (the process of learning to behave in an way that is appropriate in your society) is necessary but can also be a traumatic experience.

Neuroscience tell us that human brain develops in stages, with the pre frontal cortex (the rational part of our brain) being the last part to develop. Naught to twenty-five is fraught with emotional, physical and mental changes but if our children are surrounded by responsible adults and wizened elders, they stand a much better chance of carrying their youthful enthusiasm into the second and third stages of their lives.

It is up to all of us as human beings, to ensure that the children of the world get to experience full and meaningful lives as responsible adults and wise elders.
